UNEP agrees to co-operate with National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India (hereinafter referred to as “NCSCM”) with respect to the demonstration project entitled “Developing a policy framework towards reducing land based nutrient pollution for improved ecosystem services in Pulicat lagoon” based on the ongoing collaboration between UNEP and NCSCM through the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM) within the framework of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land based Activities (GPA)..
The purpose of this project is to develop a policy framework towards reducing land based nutrient load reaching the Pulicat Lagoon through the waterways. This would enhance the ecosystem goods and services of the Pulicat lagoon and lead to a healthier lagoon ecosystem. In the long term, the direct and indirect benefits include community wellbeing, improved ecosystem health, reduced Nr pollution and lagoon ecosystem restoration.
This project will be mainly aligned to the Chemicals, Waste and Air Quality Sub-Programme of UNEP, under which a priority is the sound management of chemicals and waste. The project has a secondary alignment to the Healthy and Productive Ecosystems Sub-Programme in promoting ecosystems-based approaches
Also, the project will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution on “Sustainable Nitrogen Management” (UNEP/EA.4./Res.14).
The overall goal of this study will be to prepare a Sustainable policy framework to restore the ecosystem, by reducing land-based nutrient pollution, enhancing livelihoods of the dependent coastal community and preparing an intuitional mechanism
