UNEP agrees to co-operate with VCG to implement a demonstration project aimed at tackling solid and liquid waste pollution, particularly from wastewater and nutrients, across the County of Vihiga.
The purpose of this project is to implement a demonstration project aimed at tackling wastewater and nutrient pollution and assist the County government in enhancing the management of solid and liquid waste across the County.
This demonstration project will be mainly aligned to the Chemicals, Waste and Air Quality Sub-Programme of UNEP, under which a priority is the sound management of chemicals and waste. The project has a secondary alignment to the Healthy and Productive Ecosystems Sub-Programme and will also contribute to the Resource Efficiency Sub-Programme under which UNEP strives to enhance circularity around the minimization of waste streams at the source through more resource-efficient practices and recovery of effluents.
Also, the project will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolutions that target land-based pollution, particularly Resolution 3/10 on “Addressing water pollution to protect and restore water-related ecosystems” (UNEP/EA.3/Res.10) and Resolution 4/14 on “Sustainable Nitrogen Management” (UNEP/EA.4.Res.14).
